Lamp Follower

You can download the file here: LampFollower.7z

EDIT: I added a new version with walking sound from the movie. The links are at the bottom.

Izzy asked me to make a lamp follower similar to the one in the movie Spirited Away.  I thought it was a great idea. I didn't know how I would do this, but still wanted to make it. First thing I tried was to make a model for it. I wanted something that looked stranger than just a pole with a lamp attached to it so I started with a foot and build a from that.  It didn't look very good but was still good enough for a prototype and to try make an NPC with it.

My first attempt was to copy an actual NPC, but then I had a lamp that greeted me, ate bread and died in battle. I didn't want that so I looked inside Eternal Bunny Pet to see how to do the same. I was surprised to discover that it was actually quite simple and I could get a following lamp in less than an hour. The hardest part was to make it cast light. I had to play around with magic effect, lights and enchantment until I finally manage to get everything work after looking how wearable lantern worked.

Then all I needed was a better looking model. I tried making something closer to the lamp in the movie with a hand instead of a foot but it looked really dumb in game because of the way it moved around. So I went back with my first idea of using a foot but made a much better looking pole. I'm not very good with textures in general and especially not with anything metallic so I just did something very simple. I think it still looks pretty good in game though.

Since I used Eternal Bunny Pet as a guide, it function the same way. After activating the mod, you just have to teleport somewhere a first time and your lamp will arrive and follow you everywhere possible. It's compatible with every other followers and even Eternal Bunny Pet.

To install simply copy Lamp.esp, Meshes and Textures folder to you Skyrim\data\

If you have any of the DLCs use the esp from the corresponding folder.
Lamp - Dawnguard if you only have Dawnguard
Lamp - Dragonborn if you only have Dragonborn
Lamp - Dawnguard + Dragonborn if you have both DLC.
This is to make factions from each DLC friendly with the lamp so they don't pay attention to it.
I didn't make one for Heartfire because I don't have it.

To uninstall, deactivate Lamp.esp and delete the folders
Skyrim\Data\Meshes\Actors\Lamp
Skyrim\Data\Textures\Actors\Lamp

If you want a version with the walking sound from the movie, you can download this version instead.

  1. Hai, rather than a foot do you think a cute hiking boot would be better?

    1. Teleporting a few time should make the lamp appear. I don't know of anything that could prevent it to come find you unless you're in an area where followers cannot go.

  5. I have a suggestion. The players can tell it to wait (tap activate), or go away (hold activate), and have it come back three days later.

    1. I'm not too sure how to do this and keep the lamp silent. When I tried to make it like a normal follower at first, it kept insulting me every time with throw voice sound. I would also love to put it away sometime because I already have a rabbit following me everywhere and a having both is sometime annoying but scripting really isn't my strength. If I find out how to do such a thing, I will try to.

    1. Did you install the cute noise version? The sound isn't very loud but it should definitely play when the lamp is walking around.

    2. Same person here: I'm using the Lamp.esp for the Dawnguard+Dragonborn since I have those expansion packs. I also doubled checked that the other six files were in the correct spots in meshes and textures. I also put all the audio sliders to max in game. :(

    1. I only have remnant of her left. I did a mistake and overwrite over my cme saves without backup. I'm trying to recreate her but it's hard. She never look right. She's a ygnord from ECE and she used a mix of SG and Univision Textures. Her clothes is a mash up I put together for her with some vanilla and tera outfits and a hat I made myself. I was going to release the hat but then I learned a better way to make much better one so I'll remake it first.

I'll probably make her a follower eventually if I manage to recreate her like she used to be. Right now I don't spend much time in game because I'm working on other stuff for some people but when I go back I'll try my best to remake her.

Sorry for reply delay. I wasn't home the last few days.

  16. is the lamp bound to a follower postion or is it just there? i put the dragonborn+dawnguard .esp and put it in the two folders needed and placed it with the rest of my mods and activated it my data files but it wont show up.

    1. It's just there. It's a NPC with following ai only. Sometime you need to teleport to a few exterior place to have it show up. I'm trying to find a way to have a summon/dismiss spell for it. Or a menu to dismiss it, but without voice.

    1. The lamp should normally appears after you teleport somewhere in a exterior cell. Sometime its slower than other and require you teleport 2 or 3 time.

  18. Thanks so much for creating this! I saw it in the background in some YouTube video about some other mods, and had to find it.

I love Lamp. He installed cleanly, he's cute (more so, kimo-kawaii), casts a lovely glow everywhere I go (great for screenshots), and even though I play as a mage-assassin, it appears he doesn't give me away at all — BEST.

P.S. is it coded to be "silent"? That is, are NPCs even aware of it, other than spatially? (I see they have to walk around it) I can't tell, because nothing happens if I get closer to the light (I stay undetected). But I'm low-level right now so I keep being spotted anyway, due to sneak skill being low.

Just wondering if it will sabotage more advanced sneaking later (like back-stabbing, etc.)

    Thanks again!

    1. Nevermind, figured this out in game. I've gone up a few levels (into the 20s). Lamp keeps being spotted! Especially by mages; they HATE him. They keep attacking him, and he doesn't die. It's hilarious. But, I'm always concerned that *I* will be detected as well, since he's so close.

Thing is, this never happened before, at lower levels. I'm wondering if it's *only* mages who see him? Or, if it's a recent problem: I had to reset my SkyrimPrefs.ini to fix something else, and noticed this happening afterwards. However, I'd been fighting mostly undead & creatures before, so can't be sure it's that. Will report back, I guess.

I also checked Lamp's sneak level in the console, for kicks. Apparently 115?

I wonder if there's a way to make him undetectable, either as a supplementary mod, or a console fix?

Hope my "experimenting' might be useful to other stealth players, also. I know most usually prefer not to have any sort of follower, but at the same time it's really nice to have him around in dark dungeons -- not only for the lighting, but companionship & humor as well.

    2. Strange that it get detected. Maybe it was something in patch 1.9? We were still on version 1.8 when I created this. I added him into every factions so that he's friend with everyone and gets ignored but it seems something might have changed. I'll have to look into it.

    3. Thanks for replying!

I've gone around to more hostile areas now, and they definitely see him every time. They don't detect ME at all, so it makes sneak-play feasible so long as I stay far enough away from Lamp that spells and weapons don't hit me. It's actually kind of nice, because he acts as a tank -- they keep attacking the invincible Lamp while I stay in the shadows and pick them off. Actually, makes it feel a bit cheat-y. Too funny, but definitely not good for a true stealth experience. Especially messes with illusion: casting fury, etc. makes everybody attack Lamp (as well as each other).

    4. By the way, have you seen the Dwarven Luggage mod?
      http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/18155/?

I think it's coded differently from Lamp; it appears to be based on a humanoid follower. Just guessing, based on interactions / behaviors. However, just wanted to mention it to you in case it might be helpful, if you're still working on Lamp. The Luggage has some options like "stay here", "follow me", and "go back to..."; saw some people ask for those, up top. "Stay here" is especially for sneaking, too.

  19. I've been having trouble installing this mod. I downloaded skyrim using steam and so the file you said to put it in doesn't exist...either steam hid it somewhere or something but there is no skyrim\data. Maybe I'm just stupid. But do you think you can help me?

    1. I'm not the creator, but have you tried using Nexus Mod Manager to import and install the file for you? It's much easier to manage mods using that software rather than trying to keep track of everything manually. Steam should be no issue.

  20. I looked this up after seeing it show up following around the reviewer's character in all those MMOxReview youtube videos! It's a good idea certainly!

The only thing I'd like to see is the ability to say "stay" or "follow" so it can be left behind temporarily. This is mostly because of Skyrim's tendency to flicker shadows when a surface it lit by more than four light sources; the engine randomly drops some of the lighting sources so if you have another light source in many interiors everything flickers.
